A mechanical keyboard is an investment that will last for years — but which switch should you choose? Here we review the three most important types and when you should use them.
Linear Switches (Red / Speed)
Linear switches have no tactile feedback and no sound — just a smooth, even movement from top to bottom. They are popular for gaming because they require little force to actuate and provide quick registration.
- Best for: Gaming, fast inputs, FPS games
- Example: Cherry MX Red, Gateron Yellow
Tactile Switches (Brown / Clear)
Tactile switches provide a small "bump" when the key is actuated — but are not loud. They are the most versatile type and are suitable for both gaming and typing.
- Best for: Mix of gaming and typing, office environments
- Example: Cherry MX Brown, Gateron Brown
Clicky Switches (Blue / Green)
Clicky switches provide the characteristic "click" sound and tactile feedback. They are very popular for typing but can annoy others in the room.
- Best for: Typing, home office, those who love the sound
- Example: Cherry MX Blue, Kailh Box White
Our Recommendation
Are you primarily a gamer? Choose linear (Red). Do you type a lot? Choose tactile (Brown). Do you want both and work alone? Clicky (Blue) is fantastic.
